Carl Friedrich Abel (1723-87) was the last shimmering musician in the history of the viola da gamba, and 2023 marks the 300th anniversary of his birth.
Abel and Johann Christian Bach (1735-82), the youngest son of J.S. Bach, were close friends. Bach-Abel Concerts, the first series of public subscription concerts in England, ran for 17 years from 1765.
At the time, the square piano (box-shaped fortepiano), created by German maker J. Zumpe, who moved to London at about the same time as the Abels, was exploding in popularity. The square piano would have been a big hit at the concerts of Abel and J.C. Bach.
The combination of viola-da-gamba and square piano is a very rare combination, and only during this period in history did the two instruments overlap. Please enjoy the sound of these two instruments woven together by Masako Hirao and Shigehiko Kawaguchi.
This concert will be held in Tokyo on Friday, July 21.
