I want to challenge myself with difficult and masterpieces of brass band music that are rarely performed."

This is a brass band concert planned mainly by university students in Fukuoka who share this desire. This is a unique opportunity for university brass bands to perform pieces that are difficult to play due to the size of the ensemble, availability of instruments, practice time, etc. This is a unique feature of a publicly organized group.

Navis" is a Latin word meaning "ship," and the band's members come from a variety of backgrounds, making it a "ship" on which a diverse group of people can interact.

The main piece of this year's program is Respighi's symphonic poem "Roman Festivals".
It was composed as the third work of the "Roman Trilogy. Many arrangements for brass band have been published and are frequently performed in competitions and concerts.
In addition, two other pieces, "Festival Variations" (C.T. Smith) and "Ghost Train" (E. Whitaker) will be performed.
We hope you will enjoy this program full of the unique charm of brass band music.

Festival Variations / Claude Thomas Smith

This is one of the most famous pieces of all time. It is a gorgeous piece that contains all the charm of brass band music.
The piece opens with a brave fanfare that makes full use of the horns' range from top to bottom, followed by the presentation and development of a magnificent and light theme. The piece follows an orthodox three-part form (rapid-flexural-rapid-rapid), within which four variations are performed.
All instruments are required to play difficult passages, but the demands on the horns are particularly high. The reason for this is that the principal horn player of the Washington Band of the U.S. Air Force, who commissioned the piece, was Smith's rival when he was a student. This piece has been performed at the Vol. 2 and Vol. 2.5 concerts of our group, but the performance was not realized.

Ghost Train / Eric Whitaker

This piece is based on an American legend called "Ghost Train," in which a steam locomotive, which should not actually exist, comes running on the tracks. Similar ghostly phenomena seem to have been reported in many parts of the world. In this piece, the ghost train running is thrillingly portrayed using a morphological simile that effectively employs a variety of wind and percussion tones and a jazz grammar that features piano and saxophone.

The piece consists of three movements: "The Ride," a vivid depiction of a locomotive starting to run; "At the Station," which describes the interaction of people at the station where the train stops; and "The Motive Revolution," a song of praise for the steam engine and the people who made it run.

Symphonic Poem "Roman Festival" / Ottorino Respighi (ed. Masato Sato)

Composed by Italian composer Ottorino Respighi in 1928 as the last work of his "Roman Trilogy" following "The Fountains of Rome" and "The Pines of Rome. It vividly depicts four "festivals" from ancient times to modern times: "CIRCENCES," "Jubilee," "October," and "Feast of the Lord.
The orchestration, which is very popular with wind and percussion instruments, has been performed by brass bands almost every year at national competitions.
