Trompe-l'oeil, a painting technique in which the eye is tricked into believing that the object depicted is real through detailed depiction, is often seen in works from the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century.
For example, in the work by Hoogstraten used in the flyer for this show, the tools used to write letters in those days are depicted with such realism that the viewer feels as if he/she could pick them up and touch them.
Baroque music played through ancient instruments is truly a trompe-l'oeil of sound, transcending time and space to recreate the lively tone of the 17th century, making modern audiences feel as if they were in Europe at that time.
Just as if opening a letter sent across borders and time and deciphering its message, the intimate ensemble of three delicate and rich-toned ancient instruments will take you on a sonic journey through 17th century Europe, from Italy, Austria, Germany, England...and beyond.
