At silent film screenings, which began to gain popularity around the 1890s, "katsudo benshi" (narrators) were used as commentators to overcome differences in language and cultural backgrounds and provide enjoyment. The existence of benshi was a natural consequence of Japan's long-established narration culture, which includes the tayu (narrator) of ningyo joruri (puppet theater) and the deyatari (storyteller) of kabuki. The "intermission music" concerts held during the intermission of silent film screenings were the first time for many Japanese people to hear Western music and musical instruments.

This concert will be performed by a small orchestra composed mainly of musicians who graduated from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, accompanied by commentary by Nanako Yamauchi, an "activity benshi," allowing everyone to listen to the music from their own perspective while gaining hints about the background and interest of the piece.

〜About the commissioned premiere work "Japanese Folk Song Fantasy

Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924), an Italian composer famous for his masterpieces such as "Tosca" and "La bohème," will present a new composition based on songs that appear in "Nihon mokyoku shu" ("Collection of Japanese Folk Songs"), which is said to be the source from which he obtained the original source for songs such as "Miya-san miya-san," "Oedo Nihonbashi," and "Kappore" quoted in his opera "Madame Butterfly" (1904). (first published in 1891 by Miki Shoten), from which he obtained the original sources for songs such as "Miyasan-miyasan," "Oedo-Nihonbashi," and "Kappore.

The "Nihon Shokyoku-shu" was the first book in the world to publish Japanese songs in Western notation with English titles, and was edited by the composer and conductor Nagai Iwai, who was a music band leader when the 4th Division Military Band (the predecessor of the current Osaka Shion Wind Orchestra) was established, and later served as a military band leader for the Imperial Guard and was also deeply involved with the Meiji Emperor. Nagai Iwai, a composer and conductor who was deeply involved with Emperor Meiji. Nagai Iwai is the great-grandfather of Motoki Tanaka, who will conduct this performance.
