Chiten "No Light" Multilingual performance with Japanese subtitles

No Light" is a multi-lingual version of "No Light," which was performed in 2012 and 2014 This production is an updated multilingual version of No Light," written by Austrian Nobel Prize-winning author Elfriede Jelinek, was inspired by the Great East Japan Earthquake and the subsequent nuclear accident. has become one of Chiten's best-known works. This production will be presented in seven languages (German, English, French, Spanish, Russian, Korean, and Japanese) with Japanese subtitles.

Ten years have passed since then. Who could have predicted at the time that the Tokyo Olympics, which had been bid for under the assumption that the effects of the nuclear accident were under control, would be held without spectators due to the Corona disaster? This new version of "No Light" expresses this gap, this oblivion, by daring to seal off the Japanese language.
This performance is inspired by the form of a satyr play, which was performed as a kyogen during the performance of Greek tragedies, in which the first and second violins speak to each other in a "situation where they cannot hear each other. I wanted to create a situation in which the first and second violins cannot hear each other by having the actors speak to each other in different languages, and to create a situation in which the words, which are also sounds, take on and off their meanings, but are still thrown out to the listener. As a result, we chose the idea of a multi-lingual performance.

In "Drive My Car" directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, in which Chiten actor Satoko Abe also appears, the performance of a stage piece performed by actors from various backgrounds in different languages was one of the climaxes of the production. This multi-lingual performance will be just like watching a movie, where you can enjoy the experience of watching a play with subtitles and the actors' words in different languages.

We would like to share this work once again with the audience from the "stolen state" of the spoken word. Composers Masahiro Miwa and Motoi Miura have teamed up to present a spectacle of words and sound that could be mistaken for a modern opera! Please look forward to Chiten's first attempt!
