In March 2021, just after the state of emergency was declared following the third wave of the new Corona virus, a concert titled "Shostakovich Song Solo Exhibition - On the 115th Anniversary of His Birth" was held quietly in Tokyo. The unprecedented attempt to have one singer and one pianist sing through six Shostakovich songs in a program of more than two hours drew a lot of attention. In this second performance, the scale is further expanded, with four singers taking turns singing songs and choruses, from "Two Fables by Krylov" written by a 15-year-old boy to "Four Poems by Captain Lebyadkin," the last song written the year before his death, in what should be called a "major retrospective of songs," covering a half-century of his career. The exhibition could be called a "major retrospective of Shostakovich's music. In Japan, Shostakovich's music has been heard only in a limited number of symphonic works, and his songs have not yet been widely performed. The performance with commentary and subtitles by Fumiko Ichiyanagi, a leading expert on Russian music, will provide an opportunity to discover a new aspect of the composer through the ideas he entrusted to the genre of songs.
